The city lives mainly from tourism and is also called the state capital of surfing. National and international surfing competitions take place here on a regular basis. Parts of the beach belong to the Parque Estadual da Costa do Sol state park.
In 2003 a large volleyball center was opened. The national team of Brazil trains in this center.
